Professor Flemings earned his Sc.D. degree in Metallurgy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1954. His innovations in metallurgy and materials science have been well recognized internationally. He has made fundamental contributions in the areas of premium quality aluminum castings, analyses of macrosegregation, flow and solidification behavior in metal-matrix composites, foam-vaporization casting and semisolid casting. Dr. Flemings has served as chairman of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and as director of the Materials Processing Center at MIT. He is the author of more than 300 publications and presentations, 26 patents and 2 academic books.
